The European capital of culture 2024

A city that has been named the European Union's (EU) Capital of Culture will host a number of cultural events with a strong pan-European focus for a period of one calendar year. Being named the European Capital of Culture gives a city the chance to reap significant cultural, social, and economic rewards. It can also improve the city's perception, and increase the city's exposure and prominence on a global level. Usually 2 cities within the European Union are chosen to be the European capitals of culture each year, but sometimes a third city is added from countries that are candidates or potential candidates for membership, or in countries that are part of the European Economic Area (EEA).

Tartu and the southern part of Estonia, together with Bad Ischl, Austria, and Bodø, Norway, will be named one of three European Capitals of Culture in 2024. Tartu's cultural offerings are diverse, as one would expect from the perennial Estonian and prospective European Capital of Culture. During the year, there is a diverse calendar of events.

Tons of events will be held in Tartu and in southern Estonia in 2024. The full schedule of the events will be available in autumn 2023. The events will be divided into different areas:

Tartu With Earth, which focuses on the topics of sustainability, the urban environment, culture, sustainability, and tourism;

Tartu With Humanity, which focuses on cultural projects, art exhibitions, music installations and concerts;
