Three Decades on the Road
The Early Years: Operations in Latvia
Lux Express began operating in Latvia in 1995, when the first international bus routes — Riga-Munich and Riga-Bremen — were launched on July 22. To enable international transport services, SIA Baltijas Autobusu Linijas was established, as Latvian law required a locally registered transport company for such operations.
Expansion: Early Growth and International Routes
After the initial routes were opened, the network of destinations expanded rapidly to include cities such as Cologne and Stuttgart. In 1996, SIA Baltijas Autobusu Linijas was granted the right to represent the international Eurolines bus network in Latvia.
In the early 2000s, long-distance routes such as Riga-Rome and Riga-Venice-Pescara were also served. On June 17, 2004, a new route— Tallinn-Warsaw-Riga-Krakow—was launched in cooperation with partners, further strengthening the company’s position as a connector between the Baltics and Central Europe.
Changes and Strategic Refocus:
Between 2008 and 2009, the company underwent a major strategic shift. Due to growing competition from airlines and new work and rest time regulations, the number of very long routes (up to 2,000 km) was reduced. Focus shifted to shorter, more frequent, and higher-quality routes to neighboring countries.
During this period, the company also rebranded: SIA Baltijas Autobusu Linijas became Lux Express Latvia SIA. The company’s main routes became: Riga–Tallinn, Riga–Vilnius, Riga–Warsaw, Riga–St. Petersburg, Riga–Moscow, Riga–Kaliningrad (from 2013)
Impact of the Pandemic and Adaptation:
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a serious challenge to the entire transport sector. Although there was hope at the end of 2020 that the situation would resolve quickly, Lux Express Latvia had to adapt swiftly. The company managed to survive these tough times successfully, proving the resilience of bus travel even in crisis situations.
In the autumn of 2021, a new domestic route — Riga-Daugavpils — was launched, but due to strict restrictions, it had to be discontinued in February 2022.
Lux Express in Latvia Today
Today, Lux Express Latvia is the most experienced international bus operator in the Latvian market. In 2024, the company reached a major milestone: after ten years of efforts, it was granted the right to operate domestic commercial bus services in Latvia, marking a new stage in local market development.
Current routes include:
Riga–Liepaja
Riga–Daugavpils
Riga–Liepaja–Palanga–Klaipėda
Riga–Tallinn
Riga–Vilnius
Riga–Warsaw
