Lux Express unveils new Superior double-decker buses in Tallinn

On Monday, May 26, Lux Express Superior double-decker buses will begin serving passengers on the Tallinn-Tartu route. These specially ordered 63-seat buses represent the company’s largest investment of the past decade, aimed at offering passengers increasingly comfortable travel options between cities.

Lux Express has made a 6 million euros investment, commissioning nine Neoplan Skyliner buses from Germany’s renowned commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN, specifically tailored for Estonian passengers. Each bus features two seating classes – Relax and Standard – and comes equipped with all the familiar Lux Express comforts, from personal media screens to free 5G internet.

With the introduction of these new buses, Lux Express has also launched a new service concept – Lux Express Superior – designed to better meet the expectations of today’s travelers. The buses feature a panoramic glass roof for a more spacious and comfortable travel experience. Every passenger has their own media screen with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing them to choose personalized entertainment. Additionally, each bus is equipped with a coffee machine serving high-quality coffee made from freshly ground beans throughout the journey.

The double-decker buses will depart from both Tallinn and Tartu on the hour, making over 30 trips in each direction daily. In total, the route will gain 500 additional seats every day.

According to Ingmar Roos, member of the Lux Express management board, the investment in new buses serves two key purposes. “As the number of bus passengers continues to grow, one of our main goals is to ensure that everyone who wants to travel between Tallinn and Tartu can find a seat, even during peak hours when demand is highest,” said Roos. “Equally important for us is to elevate Estonia’s mobility system to a new level of quality and value. We believe that by continually investing in more comfortable buses, we can encourage people to give up their personal cars and instead choose a travel option that is both more convenient and more sustainable for the environment and their wallets.”

According to Roos, Lux Express has spent the past 15 years deliberately focusing on increasing passenger numbers by consistently investing in more comfortable buses.

“In the 1990s, when Lux Express’s predecessor began operating double-decker buses in Estonia, there was no opportunity to invest in new vehicles – existing buses were used, with the primary goal of serving as many passengers as possible. Comfort was secondary at the time,” Roos recalled. “Over the years, both the company’s and passengers’ expectations and capabilities evolved, which led to the decision in 2007 to phase out the older double-decker buses and make the first major investment in new, factory-ordered single-decker buses. These had fewer seats but offered significantly greater comfort.”

“By 2025, conditions have improved to the point where we can now acquire custom-built double-decker buses directly from the factory – without government support – with maximum comfort as the top priority,” he added.

Roos noted that passengers recognize and appreciate this effort. This is reflected in the record 2.1 million passengers who traveled between Estonian cities with Lux Express in 2024 – the highest in the company’s nearly 30-year history. “Customer feedback and the steadily growing number of travelers prove that comfort, high capacity, and frequent departures no longer have to be mutually exclusive,” Roos said.

A total of 40 of Lux Express’s 184 drivers, all of whom have undergone special training, will operate the new Superior double-decker buses on Estonian roads.
