The number of passengers travelling on the coaches operated by AS Lux Express, the largest international coach route operator in Estonia belonging to the Mootor Grupp increased by 16.4% during the first half-year of 2010 reaching 185,721 passengers. By the end of the first six months of 2009, the company had provided transportation services for 159,546 passengers.
According to Hannes Saarpuu, the Chairman of the Board of AS Lux Express Estonia, the number of passengers started increasing already during the last year. “The current behaviour of consumers supports the development of coach transportation services – customers expect good ticket prices and frequent departures,“ Saarpuu said. “The past six months involved additional risks for us since we switched from a long distance route-oriented strategy to a regional route strategy and created two new brands to replace our long-distance trademark Eurolines, namely Lux Express aimed at business travellers and Simple Express aimed at more price sensitive customers. The results of the first six months of 2010 show that the customers are satisfied with the changes,“ Saarpuu said.
Lux Express experienced the most significant growth in the number of passengers on the Riga-Kaliningrad coach route where the number of passengers increased by 97.5% when compared to the figures of 2009. The number of passengers travelling on the Riga-St. Petersburg route also increased by almost 50%. A stabile growth could be seen on the popular Tallinn-Riga and Tallinn-St. Petersburg routes where the number of passengers increased by 19.1% and 14.4%, respectively. The number of passengers did not decrease on any of the routes the results of which throughout the years were compared.
The revenue of AS Lux Express Estonia from coach route transportation services increased by 15.5% during the first half-year of 2010, mounting to 46 million Estonian kroons. In 2009 the company’s revenue mounted to almost 40 million Estonian kroons.
Saarpuu predicts that the number of customers using coach transportation services in the Baltic Sea region will continue to grow during the next few years, which is why AS Lux Express Estonia has made significant investments in purchasing new buses and introducing new bus routes. More specifically, four new buses started operating on the Tallinn-St. Petersburg route earlier this year and in June the company launched a new cheap coach product called the Simple Express.
AS Lux Express Estonia offers international coach transportation services under two brands – the Lux Express and the Simple Express, the first of which is aimed at business travellers demanding added value and the second at passengers valuing affordable and fast coach connections.
The estimated market share of Lux Express Estonia in 2009 was 70%. The company operates almost 50 modern tourist coaches. The main representational offices of Lux Express including operational centres and sales networks are located in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Klaipeda and St. Petersburg.
